Ramesh R. Rao

Ramesh Rao is the director of the University of California San Diego division of the California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology (Calit2). In 2004 he was appointed the first holder the QUALCOMM Endowed Chair in Telecommunications and Information Technologies in the department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, where he has been a faculty member since 1984. Prior to becoming the Calit2 UCSD division director in 2001, Professor Rao was the director of the Center for Wireless Communications (CWC) at UCSD.

Dr. Rao is involved on a day-to-day basis with a wide variety of research initiatives. He leads several major interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects and has been a PI on dozens of federal-, state-, foundation- and industry-funded grants. He has authored nearly 200 peer-reviewed technical papers, contributed a half a dozen book chapters and served as an editor on two books. Dr. Rao has been a senior member of IEEE since 1990 and has twice been a member of the Board of Governors of the IEEE Information Theory Society (1997-1999, 2000-2002).

In 2007 Dr. Rao became the chair of the Committee for Healthcare and Information Technology, which is a part of the Partnership for the Global Economy program of the San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation (SDREDC). He is also on the Board of Directors of CommNexus San Diego: A Network of Communications Companies (CommNexus).
