The Center for Wireless Communications (CWC) of the University of California at San Diego offers a cross-disciplinary program of research and education targeted at the emerging needs of the cellular and wireless communications industry.

Founded in February 1995, the Center is committed to developing a strong university-partnership needed for producing a relevant program of systems and technology-oriented research.The Center places high priority on strategic planning, collaboration, technology transfer, and the generation of highly trained graduates at all degree levels to meet industrial human resources needs.

The Center for Wireless Communications was established at the School of Engineering, University of California, San Diego in February 1995. Faculty affiliated with the Center are drawn from the departments of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Computer Science and Engineering. The Center pursues a cross-disciplinary program of research and education targeted at the emerging needs of the cellular and wireless communications industry. It relies upon a strong university-industry partnership to produce a relevant program of systems- and technology-oriented research, and places high priority on strategic planning, collaboration, technology transfer, and the generation of highly trained graduates at all degree levels to meet industrial human resources needs.

Topics of interest include low-power circuitry (radio frequency, analog and digital), smart antennas, communication theory (including speech, video, and image compression), communication networks (including management and control policies, and speech-sharing strategies), and multimedia applications. A unifying theme for the Center's program is that of Broadband Wireless, i.e., approaches for extending capabilities and services from the emerging broadband wireline infrastructure to the wireless pedestrian and mobile domains.

Activities at the Center are supported entirely by the wireless communications industry, and representatives from participating companies are heavily involved in all aspects of the Center's operations.

Companies requiring further details on membership, or students wishing to learn more about opportunities for study within the Center including information on RA grants, should contact either:

Wireless service in support of vehicular and pedestrian users has emerged as a cornerstone of modern telecommunications. When coupled to the emerging broadband wireline infrastructure, wireless access will extend the benefits of multimedia services from the home and business environments, ushering in an era of anyone, anywhere, anytime, any media communications. It is within this context that the Center for Wireless Communications was founded. It is the mission of the Center to:

  • Create a multi-disciplinary research and education environment conducive to the early identification of high impact wireless communications opportunities;
  • Pursue a relevant research effort focused upon the creation of a fundamental knowledge base needed for subsequent commercialization;
  • Transfer acquired knowledge and technologies to the commercial sector; and
  • Produce graduates at all degree levels trained with the skills needed to satisfy the human resources needs of the wireless communications industry.

Our strategy is predicated upon the involvement of industry in all phases of our operations, including identification of potential research projects, collaboration in execution of our research program, and early exposure of students to industrial culture and expectations.
