5G communication systems are expected to have 1000 times larger capacity using denser base station, wider communication bandwidth and higher spectral efficiency. Together with millimeter-wave communications, in-band full duplex radio system is one of potential solutions. In-band full duplex radio, which is often called STAR (simultaneous transmit and receive) system can achieve twice higher spectral efficiency theoretically. Generally, the in-band full duplex system is considered impossible due to the strong interference from its own transmitting power (self-interference), and therefore the self-interference cancellation (SIC) is the key aspect of the in-band full duplex system. This talk presents recent research aimed at the self-interference cancellation especially at antenna and RF domain, and its closed loop system to control the RF SIC circuits.
Byung-Wook Min (email@example.com) received the B.S. degree from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, in 2002, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from The University of Michigan at Ann Arbor, in 2004 and 2007, respectively. In 2006-2007, he was a visiting scholar with the University of California at San Diego, La Jolla. In 2008-2010, he was a senior engineer at Qualcomm Inc., Santa Clara, CA and Austin, TX. His research interests include Si RFIC and communication systems for microwave and millimeter-wave applications.
