Scope of Position:

This position of Research Associate, Optical Physics is in the Micro and Nano-Optics (MNO) department of the Science and Technology Division of Corning. MNO combines deep understanding of display and telecommunication systems with fundamental research in structured materials to develop new advantaged optical products. We seek out scientists with experience in optics and materials. The candidate should have a track record of combining experimental results and fundamental understanding to yield new insights about the interaction of optical fields with surface and volumetric structures within glass and ceramics. Our projects are fast-paced, and we expect our scientists to rapidly build up new experimental and modeling capabilities as the need arises. We constantly add to our experimental capabilities, which today include the full range of display system measurements, scattering measurements, waveguide measurements, and various linear and nonlinear spectroscopies. Our product design length scales go from tens of nanometers to tenths of millimeters --- requiring scientists knowledgeable in the variety of modeling techniques required to understand how features of these sizes impact material performance.

Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Develop and test new material and optical design concepts to improve display performance
  • Model, design, and measure optical structures that produce desired scattering and diffractive properties
  • Work closely with scientists, engineers, and technicians to develop and execute multi-disciplinary experiment plans
  • Develop and maintain a state-of-the-art understanding of current display and/or telecommunication systems technology
  • Develop subject matter expertise in display optics and provide consulting to Corning business units

Travel Requirements: < 10%, some international travel required

Required Education: MSc. Or Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry, Material Science, Electrical Engineering

Required Skills:

Build models and use them in close conjunction with experiments to address complex technical problems in the areas of wireless communication, optical communication, optical behavior of textured glass surfaces, thin film structures, and optical devices. Examples of relevant research areas are:

Scope of Position:

This position is for a research scientist in a high data rate optical communication systems group. The preferred candidate should have in-depth knowledge of optical waveguides and components for communication system, including hands-on experience in waveguide materials, design, fabrication, characterization, and transmission. In this role, the candidate will have the opportunities to work with multidisciplinary and cross-functional teams, apply fundamental understanding to solve complex problems to support current and future business in optical communications. Modifies and develops testing processes to improve evaluation of new products or new properties.
Document research findings in internal research reports, invention disclosures and refereed publications.
Makes technical presentations to customers and at conferences.

Required Education: PhD in Optics, Physics or other related majors

Scope of Position:

Required Skills:

Someone who is practical, capable and passionate about learning quickly with an inventive nature is a necessity.  Demonstrating a broad optical engineering understanding with a focus on lens design, free-space beam propagation (design), sequential and non-sequential ray tracing (modeling) is needed. 

  • Ph.D. in Optical Engineering, Physics, or related engineering degree with 3-6 years, MS with 8-10 years, or a BS with 15+ years of industrial experience designing and testing mechanical devices, systems, or products.
  • There will be occasional international and domestic travel based on business needs.  A reasonable estimate is 1-3 trips per quarter.
  • Capable of developing and executing optical experiments with laboratory hardware
  • Experience in optical design for displays (LCD, projection, etc.) and photonic components.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceive of novel optical concepts.

Desired Skills:

  • Data processing experience with MATLAB (or equivalent software) and a familiarity with LabVIEW software, and optical modeling software such as Zemax or LightTools.
  • Optical packaging (laser/fiber/free-space optics).
  • Well-developed social and communication skills with an ability to work independently and in high-performance teams in situations where problems are not well defined and working in a multi-disciplinary environment.
